Doctor Strange

Could Marvel deliver yet another good super hero film………Yes, I think they did.

Story wise, it’s another origin based film about how Dr. Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) becomes earth’s sorcerer supreme. Nothing particularly new but it is fairly faithful to the comics and does introduce you to the use of Magic in the Marvel universe.

As per normal, Benedict Cumberbatch is very watchable and is Dr. Strange in the same way that Robert Downey Jnr is Iron Man, he just looks and acts right. As with most origin stories the focus is primarily on the lead so you do not get much time to learn about the other characters although Chiwetel Ejiofor and Tilda Swinton are always watchable.

What sets this film apart from other super hero films are the special effects. It’s not that they are miles better than any other film but how they are used to portray the world of magic, it’s very trippy in an Inception kind of way (but taken up a couple of notches). It would have been good to see in 3D.

Personally I liked the ending even if it is a bit of a let-down when you meet the big baddie (he was more Master Control Program than his flame haired comic character).

Note: Remember to stay for the two extras scenes during the end credits (one right at the very end).

Verdict: Another solid entry into the Marvel Universe which was just short of being up there with the best superhero films (The Avengers/The Dark Knight) but I’m very much looking forward to see what they will do with the sequel.

  • Benedict Cumberbatch
  • Great depiction of a Magical World

  • No time to flesh out supporting characters
