I really enjoyed the first Fantastic Beasts and had high hopes for the sequel, but alas, it was not to be. In fact, this is the first film based in the Harry Potter universe where I came out of the cinema disappointed.
Whereas the first one was inventive and fun with interesting quirky characters and a lighthearted tone. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald was almost the total opposite; there weren’t many beasts, the comedy was almost non-existent, there were unrealistic character changes and the plot felt too similar to previous episodes and worst of all, Newt went all snively and weedy (I lost my empathy for him entirely).
I can’t complain about the look and the effects though, which are as great as usual and thankfully, Jude Law puts in a great performance as Dumbledore (the one shining light in the film) but, all in all, we are only talking an ok film and nowhere near the heights of the original. I am left with one question though, did Grindelwald actually commit any crimes…………or was it all JK?
Verdict: The next one needs to be a massive improvement to keep the franchise fun and exciting. This film was simply not fantastic.
