The Kid Who Would be King (TKWWBK) is yet another King Arthur related film but aimed squarely at the younger generation with children taking the adults places and mainly being set around a school (yes, you are right in thinking its an English Harry Potter with swords instead of wands) plus some other typical English magic locations.
The kids are all good (although Louis Ashbourne Serkis is the stand-out as the main character) and it is mildly amusing in places but it isn’t laugh out loud funny and the action is ok but nothing amazing. It also does take some odd turns which make it a bit messy (I think it would have benefited from dropping the odd unnecessary scene to shorten its run time and focus more on the action). It does have some good invention though with a good use of a school for a battle ground and they came up with a great way of performing magic (its hard to describe but it something like a strange mixture of clicking noises and hand movements that sounds odd but looks cool on film). Kudos to whoever came up with that idea.
Verdict: A perfectly acceptable kids film with the odd good bit but nothing outstanding.
